Nutrition cluster/sector coordination aims to support the timely, quality, and appropriate delivery of nutrition responses to effectively and accountably meet the needs of people affected by humanitarian crises, while safeguarding and improving their nutritional status.
The coordination of the collective nutrition response during humanitarian crises is facilitated by a previously activated nutrition cluster. The 2015 Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Cluster Coordination Reference Module outlines the protocols detailing the fundamental elements of cluster coordination and the six plus one (6+1) cluster functions. The first function is to “support service delivery” by establishing a platform that enables partners to: 1) provide nutrition services in emergencies to beneficiaries in accordance with a Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) and the strategic priorities of the nutrition sector/cluster; and 2) prevent duplication of efforts. The nutrition cluster coordinator (NCC) collaborates closely with the Information Management Officer (IMO) and Cluster Partners, and ensures the optimal structure, governance, and skills are in place to fulfil all coordination requirements set forth by the IASC, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Cluster Lead Agency (CLA), and the Global Nutrition Cluster (GNC). In this task, the nutrition cluster teams are assisted by the Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) and the Technical Working Groups.
The Nutrition Cluster is not systematically activated; upon deactivation, it may be replaced by other forms of nutrition coordination within existing governmental structures.
