Venezuela is facing a severe national emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck on 24 June 2026, causing extensive destruction across at least seven states. With thousands injured, significant loss of life, major infrastructure damage, and more than 12,000 people displaced, local and international responders – including Urban Search and Rescue teams from 27 countries – are working intensively in the hardest‑hit areas. The UN and partners are coordinating a multi‑sectoral response in La Guaira, where impacts remain most acute.
This disaster hits a country that was already struggling with deep structural challenges. High costs in local markets and strict import regulations have long limited access to essential nutrition supplies, significantly hindering the effectiveness of nutrition interventions. These constraints are compounded by fuel shortages and geographic barriers that make it difficult to reach remote rural and jungle communities in urgent need of support. In these areas, chronic shortages of healthcare professionals and inadequate facilities further weaken service delivery, while economic shifts have widened the gap between urban centers and rural or Indigenous populations. Many communities lack support systems that reflect their cultural needs, leaving them even more vulnerable now.
The GNC provides Coordination, Information Management, Nutrition Information Systems, and Nutrition in Emergencies (NiE) programming-related support, including nutrition assessment and protection of Infant and Young Children Feeding practices in emergencies.
