The Global Nutrition Cluster (GNC), in collaboration with the Mali Nutrition Cluster, the Somalia Nutrition Cluster, and the Sudan Nutrition Cluster, works to strengthen support for local and national organisations working in nutrition in emergencies (NiE).
The GNC and its partners have provided technical support to countries since 2015. Through this experience, the GNC has learned that local and national organisations can benefit from support outside of technical nutrition topics to improve their delivery of high-quality and scalable nutrition programmes.
In response, this project was developed to provide a comprehensive package of support, covering both organisational and NiE technical capacity strengthening, with the aim of reinforcing nutrition interventions for the affected populations and informing the GNC capacity strengthening approach.
The GNC worked with the following organisational capacity strengthening partners for this project:
RedR UK | MENA Development Valley | Centimani |
In addition, Action Against Hunger Somalia and Action contre la faim Mali were instrumental in the nutrition in emergency capacity strengthening activities.
The following organisations were invited to the project following a transparent application process overseen by a selection committee convened in each country:
Banadir Primary Health Care Consortium (BPHCC) | Development and Empowerment for Humanity (DEH) | KAAH Relief and Development Organization (KAAH) | Nomadic Development Organization (NODO) |
Dar for Community Development (DCD) | National Planning Organization (NPO) | Peace organization for Rural Development (PORD) | Sahari Organization for Development (SAHARI) |
The participatory capacity assessment process was essential to ensure that activities were prioritised according to what was most valuable for the organisations. In each country, an in-depth capacity assessment tool was used to understand both organisational and NiE strengths, weaknesses, and priorities. Based on this, an overarching capacity strengthening approach was developed to meet some of their priority needs in each country.
The following NiE capacity strengthening activities were provided:
