Cash and Voucher Assistance for Nutrition: New resources and lessons learned

In this webinar we review two key documents designed to guide nutrition practitioners in developing cash or voucher programs. 

We also hear from colleagues in Myanmar as they share insights from their work creating standard operating procedures for using cash transfers to address child wasting. Additionally, subject-matter experts reflect on the presentations, followed by a plenary Q&A session for further discussion.

Speakers bios

PRESENTERS

Jacqueline Frize (independent consultant) is a public health nutritionist with 25 years of experience in food security, nutrition and livelihoods programming worldwide. This includes extensive cash and markets operational experience as well as developing guidance, coordinating cash working groups, designing and delivering training. Jacqueline has evaluated nutrition and CVA interventions and outcomes for INGOs, donors, the UN and the Red Cross Movement. She is an active member of the Global Nutrition Cluster and the Cash and Nutrition Working Group.

Marina Tripaldi (Save the Children) has 14 years' experience in Humanitarian and Development Programming, mainly on the use Cash and Voucher (CVA) Assistance, Food Security and Livelihoods and Nutrition. As Senior CVA Technical Advisor, she focuses her work on the promotion of CVA for Nutrition outcomes, both in Save the Children and externally. Her areas of expertise include capacity building, evidence generation & learning. Marina holds a degree in Economics, Marketing, and International Trades from the University of Genoa (Italy) and she is also a certified analyst on Household Economy Analysis (HEA) and Integrated Phase Classification (IPC).

Swe Linn Maung (Save the Children International Myanmar) is a Senior Nutrition Advisor and Co-Chair to the Myanmar Nutrition CVA Task Force. He holds an M.SC. in Nutrition and Dietetics and brings over a decade of experience in public health nutrition. He has a proven track record in providing technical leadership and developing high-quality nutrition programs.

PANELLISTS

Ines Lezama (Ethiopia Nutrition Cluster) leads efforts to coordinate nutritional emergency responses for millions of children and women. Key achievements are enhanced and increased the number of nutrition assessments and analysis (ii) led advocacy efforts for a scaled-up nutrition response, (iii) promoted local solutions and data-driven approaches to better understand and address nutritional needs and (iv) enhanced efforts for having CVA for nutrition outcomes guidelines in Ethiopia and for extending the response using CVA.

Maggie Holmesheoran (USAID) works as a Nutrition Advisor for USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance covering a global portfolio of emergency responses. She is an expert on the use of cash and vouchers for nutrition with a particular focus on appropriate calibration of transfer value models for adequate nutritional coverage.

Annalies Borrel (UNICEF) has 30 years of work experience in nutrition, food security and livelihoods working in Africa, Balkans, Europe, Middle East and south Asia, and has held senior leadership positions with different UN agencies, donors, Red Cross, Governments, NGOs and academia including in countries affected by fragility, crises and development. Annalies is currently the Senior Adviser for Nutrition and Social Protection with UNICEF, focusing on efforts to ensure that social protection systems and other systems are leveraged to be impactful on maternal and child nutrition outcomes including the prevention of malnutrition.

Mirko Tommasi (CALP Network) is the West and Central Africa regional representative at the CALP Network, where he leads different initiatives on cash and voucher assistance (CVA). With over fifteen years of humanitarian and development work, Mirko has engaged in CVA in fragile settings, linkages between humanitarian CVA and social protection, and other areas related to CVA. In the past, he has also worked in the implementation of CVA programs for nutrition, mainly in Africa.

Mabasa Farawo (Myanmar Nutrition Cluster) has more than 15 years national and international experience in Southeast Asia, the Horn of Africa/ East Africa, and Southern Africa in cluster coordination, programme management, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation in developing countries, complex emergencies, and post conflict zones. He has been the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator in Myanmar since 2022 and has seen incremental progress in meeting the humanitarian needs in the country, albeit under difficult conditions amidst funding, access and other constraints.
