A Nutrition Information System (NIS) is an integrated and centrally coordinated set of processes designed to continuously collect, analyse and interpret nutrition-related data. This data is then transformed into actionable information and disseminated to facilitate timely and effective decision-making aimed at improving the nutritional status of the population. The data can be categorized as either nutrition-specific (e.g., anthropometric measurements or infant and young child feeding practices) or nutrition-sensitive (e.g., risk factors such as food security, water, sanitation, health-related, factors).
A robust national Nutrition Information System (NIS) enhances the ability to facilitate decision-making essential for addressing critical needs and improving nutrition outcomes in emergency and humanitarian contexts. Data from the NIS can be utilized to assess the conditions of individuals affected by crises, as well as to plan, implement, and monitor nutrition interventions, ensuring accountability to the affected population, donors, and the broader public. This system aids in understanding the outcomes and impacts of the nutrition interventions.
