Humanitarian needs are rapidly increasing due to protracted crises, the emergence of new conflicts, and the escalating global climate crisis. Humanitarians are tasked with alleviating human suffering and addressing humanitarian needs while also advocating for and guiding development efforts that tackle the underlying causes of needs, risks, and vulnerability, and that enhance resilience. There is an urgent need for development initiatives in fragile contexts that continue to provide and strengthen basic social services during prolonged crises. The Humanitarian-Development and Peace (HDP) Nexus (HDPN) approach to nutrition seeks to foster partnerships between HDP actors to ensure coherent and comprehensive HDPN actions, converging on the same at-risk populations, to both prevent and respond to malnutrition and achieve more sustainable outcomes.
The Nutrition Cluster and other Clusters that have a role to play in addressing malnutrition should aim to design responses that promote coherence and complementarity between lifesaving, development, and peace interventions to achieve collective outcomes. This requires collaborative and integrated analysis, planning, resource mobilisation, programming, monitoring and evaluation under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator (RC/HC) and national and local authorities.
