On 24 June, a side session to the GNC Global Event brought together over 60 participants from 33 countries with humanitarian operations and 12 countries from the Global North. The session provided an opportunity to collectively reflect on the importance of strengthening Nutrition in Emergencies (NiE) capacities, with a focus on enabling more locally led and locally owned nutrition responses.

Co-facilitated by Cécile Basquin and Danka Pantchova, co-chairs of the GNC NiE Capacity Strengthening Working Group, the session engaged participants through a live interactive voting platform (menti.com), collecting real-time input on key guiding questions.

Participants represented a diverse audience, including UN agencies, international and national NGOs, government representatives, and individual experts. Together, they identified persistent challenges to prioritising NiE capacity strengthening and ensuring accessible learning for local actors—among them:

  • Limited and unpredictable funding
  • High staff turnover
  • Language barriers
  • Lack of context-adapted learning resources

The discussion also surfaced good practices, such as:

  • Embedding NiE capacity-strengthening in preparedness plans at national and sub-national levels
  • Integrating the NiE curriculum into national health and nutrition policies and programmes

Participants proposed several solutions to enhance sustainability and accessibility of NiE learning, including:

  • Incorporating NiE into national academic curricula
  • Building partnerships with local universities
  • Advocating for long-term, nationally owned capacity-building plans

Cécile presented the GNC’s strategic approach, which aims to broaden access to NiE learning, particularly for national and local practitioners, by leveraging innovative learning methods, strategic partnerships, and emerging technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence to personalise and improve access to training.

Danka closed the session by encouraging participants to reflect on how they could apply these ideas within their own contexts and to share new, locally relevant solutions.

Participants were also reminded to explore the resources and tools available on the GNC Capacity Strengthening web page and to reach out to the GNC for further support.
