In this webinar, you'll learn about Save the Children’s Food Security and Livelihood Anticipatory Action approach and how two flagship tools – the Household Economy Analysis and the Cost of Diet – were used in Malawi to project gaps in food security and affordability of nutritious diets and model Anticipatory Actions (AA) to protect food and nutrition security and prevent a rise in malnutrition.
This session is part of the Anticipatory Action for Nutrition Webinar Series, launched by the Nutrition and AA Taskforce to explore best country practices, operational tools, and ways to integrate Anticipatory Action into nutrition programming.
It also includes a discussion on lessons and opportunities for strengthening the nutrition components of Food security focused Anticipatory Action frameworks and plans in Malawi.

Natalie Roschnik is a Senior Nutrition Advisor at Save the Children UK with over 25 years’ experience supporting multi-sector nutrition and public health programmes in Africa and Asia, with a focus on prevention of malnutrition. Natalie is also a part time doctorate student at the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva.
Domitille Kauffmann is a Senior Nutrition Expert with over 20 years of experience in integrating nutrition in food systems, resilience, and climate programmes and policies. Since 2023, she has spearheaded the establishment and co-chairing of the Global Nutrition Cluster (GNC) Climate Crisis Working Group, and the dedicated taskforce on Nutrition and Anticipatory Action. She has authored foundational global guidelines and eLearning modules on nutrition and food systems, and protecting diets through anticipatory action.
Lisa Butenhoff is the Head of Child Poverty and Climate in Save the Children International. She brings more than 20 years experience in the humanitarian and development sector, with more recent work over the past 3 years focused on integrating child centered anticipatory action into programs and operations at Save the Children and supporting partners to scale risk informed action.
Laura Swift is a Senior Food Security and Livelihoods Technical Advisor with over 15 years of experience supporting programmes, predominantly with Save the Children in sub-Saharan Africa. She has more than a decade of experience leading anticipatory action initiatives, including the application of Household Economy Analysis (HEA).
Md Masud Rana is a Senior Nutrition Advisor at Save the Children UK, with over 17 years of experience leading nutrition research, programme design and technical support across South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. His current work focuses on integrating nutrition into anticipatory action, food security and climate resilience frameworks.
Phindile C. Lupafya is a Senior Public Health Nutrition Specialist with more than 15 years of experience leading integrated nutrition sensitive programmes programmes, policy development, and emergency nutrition responses across Southern Africa. Currently serving as Senior Technical Advisor for Health and Nutrition at Save the Children International in Malawi, she provides strategic leadership on multisectoral nutrition programming spanning across health, food systems, social protection, WASH, and climate resilience. She has led the development of major nutrition and climate resilience programmes, coordinated responses to crises and has championed efforts to strengthen nutrition preparedness, surveillance, anticipatory and response actions to protect vulnerable women and children from the impacts of climate and economic shocks.
Steve Kamtimaleka is the Humanitarian Affairs and Anticipatory Action Manager with Save the Children International, in Malawi. A seasoned humanitarian and development expert with more than 15 years experience and an active member of the Southern Africa Regional and National Anticipatory Action Technical Working Groups. Steve is currently a PhD student in Agricultural and Resource Economics with a passion for research on Food Systems.
Chimwemwe Kamala is a Senior Child Poverty Advisor, with Save the Children International in Malawi. She is a development specialist with over 15 years of experience in agriculture, nutrition-sensitive programming, market systems development, and resilience building. She works with farmer organizations, communities, and development partners to strengthen food security, improve nutrition outcomes, and promote sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
