'Tragedy upon tragedy'
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has escalated significantly in recent days. On September 28, 2024, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut, resulting in the death of the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and other senior commanders. These strikes have caused substantial civilian casualties and widespread displacement, with hundreds killed and thousands forced to flee their homes. The ongoing hostilities have severely disrupted daily life in Lebanon, straining essential services and deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The GNC and Lebanon country team hosted a donor briefing on 7 November to update donors on the current humanitarian situation and urgent overall and nutrition sector needs of the affected populations and to mobilize financial support to secure the US$ 7.9 million required to respond to the immediate nutrition needs of the 190,000 people targeted. More than 10 donors along with GNC team, Lebanon nutrition sector partners and relevant stakeholders attended the briefing.
Nutrition Support for internally displaced people (IDPs)
- Nutrition coverage has expanded and partners will be supporting 17 mobile Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) Satellite Units (PSUs) through integrating the full nutrition package to provide specialized Nutrition services and distribution of supplies, covering more than 107 new non-supported shelters.
- Increasing rates of malnutrition among children under 5 and pregnant and lactating women - access constraints to nutrition services is largest contributor to this increase. As a response, UNICEF has initiated a new modality with ministry of public health to have floating nurse to provide treatment at the shelters. The nutrition sector is working to build the capacity of the health and nutrition staff.
