The military operation in Ukraine poses an immediate and growing threat to the lives and well-being of the entire country’s population. Humanitarian needs are multiplying and spreading by the hour. Hundreds of thousands of people are either in a shelter or on the move to safety, most of them being old people, people with disabilities, women, infants and children; with men aged 18 to 60 being requested to fight. Most mother-infant dyads that are on the move are separated from loved ones. Mothers of non-breastfed infants, particularly those that are on the move, have limited access to safe water, sterilisation equipment and Breastmilk Substitutes (BMS); and supporting the non-breastfed infant is emerging as a key concern due to pre-crisis high-rates of BMS use in Ukraine.
