IASC Key Messages on Climate Change, Humanitarian Action and COVID-19

These messages address the climate change related concerns in the context of humanitarian action and  COVID-19. The objective of these key messages is to facilitate consistent messaging among IASC members during upcoming climate change events in 2020. This includes the announcement of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to co-host an event convening global leaders on 12 December 2020 to rally greater climate action and ambition.

The key messages emanate from the OPAG-assigned area of Results Group 3 to develop common narratives on specific issues of concern to support IASC members’ efforts in their collective and/or bilateral advocacy efforts. They are intended to supplement a more detailed set of common messages, which are being produced by Results Group 3 and which will cover the humanitarian impacts of climate change, including how these impact different vulnerable groups, and different types of needs and sectors, as well as more detailed recommendations on reducing climate change driven humanitarian needs.

We want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the authors of these key messages who have worked diligently and have consulted widely to capture the feedback received from the IASC members.

Please contact the co-Chairs of the IASC RG3 sub-group on climate change and humanitarian action, Ms. Kirsten Hagon <Kirsten.HAGON@ifrc.org>  and Ms. Kirsten Mildren <mildren@un.org> should you have any questions.
